When we were in Brisbane, our tour director confirmed why , even though we’re all speaking English, sometimes we don’t quite understand our Aussie friends. The reason he gave – Australia and the United States are separated by the Pacific Ocean and a common language! And our bus driver further acknowledged our confusion by stating “ We shorten everything!” Here’s some “Aussie” we’ve learned during our travels!
Pokie – poker and slot machines
Hot chocy – hot chocolate
Servo – gas station
Smoko – smoke or coffee break
Kip – short sleep or nap
Lollies – candy
Hoo Roo – goodbye
Mate – buddy, friend
Scratchy – lottery ticket
Wooly jumper – sheep
Lippy- lip stick
Mozzies – mosquitoes
Ambo: Ambulance vehicle or ambulance driver.
Ankle biter: small child
Bangers and mash: sausages and mashed potato.
Coldie – a beer
Crook – sick
Footy – Australian football
G’day – hello
Swimmers -bathing suits
Jumper – sweater
Shonky – unreliable and not to be trusted
Loo -toilet
Broley – umbrella
Spanner – wrench
Sticky wicket – a problem or confusing situation
Billy – tea pot
Stubby – beer
